Today, in an all new session of THE READING ROOM, we are going to review ‘Because Life is a Gift by Disha

  • Book Description:

He is ten years old and confined to a wheelchair. But that’s not his identity. To the world, he is India’s youngest patent holder for inventing variants of chess for six, twelve and sixty players.

Have you heard of the Army Major who was declared dead in the Kargil war, but is India’s first blade runner today?

Do you think a woman without hands can be one of India’s leading painters?

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you see a differently-abled person? Pity? Sympathy?

The real-life success stories of fifteen differently-abled people charted in Because Life is a Gift will make you think otherwise. You will sense pride replace all feelings of pity and sympathy for they have fought against all odds to achieve their dreams.

This book is a tribute to their courage, passion and zest for life. They will challenge your notion of the impossible. They will inspire you to live life to the fullest, because life is truly a gift.

  • My View:

‘Because Life is a gift’ is the second book by Disha after ‘My Beloved MBA Plans’. The blurb which is completely different from any currently available books by Indian authors and the genre which is motivation grows my interest in the book. I haven’t read her first book and have no clue about her narrating style or plot framing style.

The Cover looks fresh and goes with the name wonderfully. But after reading the whole book, I would say it could have been designed in a more significant manner which would have gone with the content better. The name though goes with the book perfectly. At every chapter of the book the readers will realize that indeed life is a gift.

Very often we become depressed in our life and seek motivation in spiritual lectures, inspiring movies or in biographies of our heroes. This book has it all. This book is the story of many heroes who have fought against the back-stabbing society, against the abnormal circumstances, against their annoying fates and have come out with flying colors. This book has stories of fifteen unrecognized heroes, who have refuse to succumb to their disabilities and made their way to happen wonders. The author has done a wonderful job by compiling these stories in one single book which will not only help the disabled people but will change our view towards them. Kudos to the author for keeping it simple and straight without giving it a visible fictional touch and injecting their own words in the exact places. The author has also described her view and what should our society do, which will help spread the awareness.

The narrating style is good and simple. The author has totally concentrated on touching the reader’s heart about the tale of the heroes and succeeded. There were a few grammatical and typos but that won’t catch the reader’s attention because they will be busy with the unbelievable stories of the differently-abled people. I appreciate the author for the research she have done for penning down such a book and for attempting to switch the lime light to those who needed it the most. I wish we have more this kind of books which will motivate the mass with real life stories of common men. A must read for all.

My rating: 4.5/5
