Today, in an all new session of THE READING ROOM, we are going to review “When Strangers Meet” by K. Hari Kumar
When Strangers Meet is a story that shows the father-son relationship from the points of view of the three main characters in the book, and all of them belongs from three different strata of society. The story is divided into three parts, the runaway, Iyer’s story and revelations. The first part has two stories running side by side, Jai Sharma; a teenager wants to take up a course but his father is totally against it. His father wants him to do engineering and against his wishes takes him to an engineering college for his admission. Frustrated Jai, fed up with his life, writes a letter to his father and runs from his house to the Delhi Metro Station where he meets Iyer and Hussain. In parallel to Jai’s story, there is another story, which is of Hussain a tea vendor. He has an obedient son who always thinks of helping his father in all possible ways. One day the family wins a jackpot and Hussain sets of his journey towards to Delhi Metro, early morning to reach the Delhi Lottery Office to collect the winning amount. The second part is that of Iyer who narrates his story to the rebellious Jai. Amidst this, the story is about these three people and their tryst with each other’s destiny that will change their lives forever.
This is a story that grabs you from the first page itself and makes your heart go out with the characters and their feelings. A story filled with pace and is a sure shot page turner. An evocative prose and I must say it’s one of the most riveting books I have ever read this year. The conversations between Iyer and Jai are the highlight of this book. Even the innocence shown by the little Arshad touched my heart. There is one line that touched me and inspired me like nothing is “You are a little man…having a modest dream…but a big heart.” Then the end revelations, this is something which was unexpected and is one of the best climaxes I have ever read in recent times. The author carved a beautiful climax that will sweep you off your feet. And I must say, this story is a perfect amalgamation of action, comedy, romance, drama and the most important one is the suspense. When Strangers Meet will stay with me for a long time. I am damn sure that this book has a power to endure and resonate forever in the minds of all those who will read this. I will definitely recommend you to grab this book
